Early Life

Yoko Ono was born in Tokyo, Japan, on February 18, 1993. Her family was closely associated with the Yasuda clan, which is a Samurai family dating back to the Edo period. The Yasuda clan is famously known as the Financial clan because of their successful history in banking. Yoko’s paternal family were warrior scholars from the Samurai class.

After the birth of Yoko, her father moved to San Francisco for work. When Ono turned two years old, the entire family moved to San Francisco to live with her father. When her younger brother was born in 1934, the entire family decided to move back to Japan again, and they did in 1937. Ono started her piano lessons and also enrolled at the Gakushuin, an elite Japanese school.

Yoko Ono and her entire family moved back to the United States in 1940 and started living in New York for a year before her father was transferred to Hanoi. She was again enrolled in an elusive school, but due to World war 2, her education was interrupted entirely. In 1945 at the time of the great fire-bombing, Yoko was in Tokyo, but her family was unharmed due to taking shelter in a reinforced bunker.

After the war was over, Ono’s family had to face great hardships, as did everyone else in Tokyo. She, along with her mother, had to beg for food and also bartered goods for rice. During this entire time, her father was still in Hanoi, although according to Yoko, he was in French Indochina serving a sentence in a prisoner of war camp.

Japan became stable enough by 1946 and returned to normality. Gakushuin school reopened again during this time. She started her studies again and was put in the same class as the future emperor of Japan. After completing graduation in 1951, Yoko started studying philosophy at Gakushuin University for two semesters.

Yoko Ono In The United States

Yoko started a new life with her family in New York City after graduating from school when she was 18 years old. She continued her education at the Sarah Lawrence College and began her lifelong affair with arts. This was when Ono started meeting various artists, poets, and other influential people she found interesting. On the other hand, her parents disliked her meetings with such people.

Soon Yoko Ono started experimenting with her art. She set some paintings on fore during live performances. Yoko married a Japanese Composer, Toshi Ichiyinagi, in 1956. However, they filed for divorce in 1962. During this period, she moved back to Japan, where she got into depression and was kept in a mental institution.

After her divorce, Yoko came back to the US and married a Jazz musician, Anthony Cox. The couple had a child together, and they collaborated on various performances of art pieces together. In 1969, the couple got a divorce after years of deteriorated marriage. This was the same year when she got married to John Lenon.

Life With John Lennon

John Lennon was impressed the first time he saw Yoko in an art exhibit in 1966. They soon started talking to each other, and the romance soon blossomed. Eventually, one time, Yoko came to John Lennon’s house to record an album named “Two Virgins,” and this is when their relationship got to the next level. Lennon’s wife came back home early that day from vacation and found Yoko wearing her bathroom in the morning.

Lennon got a divorce from his wife and found out that Yoko is pregnant with Lennon’s child, although she had a miscarriage later. During this time, Lennon and Yoko were increasingly involved in the Vietnam war protests through “Bed Ins For Peace.” They got married officially in 1969.

Over the next few years, Ono started to collaborate with John Lennon and also with the Beatles. The first music album the couple created together was “Unfinished Music No.1: Two Virgins”. Yoko also provided the lead vocals for a Beatles song, “The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill.”

In 1969, Yoko and Lennon created their own brand “the Plastic Ono Band. In 1970, Yoko released Plastic Ono Band, her first solo album, which was followed by the second album in 1971, “Fly.”

The Beatles were disbanded by this time, and Yoko with Lennon relocated to Manhattan. Their relationship started becoming strained, and the couple separated in 1973. By 1975 they reconciled again, and Yoko gave birth to Lenon’s second son named “Sean.” This marked the starting of John’s long break from music which lasted until his murder in 1980.
