Yoko Ono and her entire family moved back to the United States in 1940 and started living in New York for a year before her father was transferred to Hanoi. She was again enrolled in an elusive school, but due to World war 2, her education was interrupted entirely. In 1945 at the time of the great fire-bombing, Yoko was in Tokyo, but her family was unharmed due to taking shelter in a reinforced bunker.
After the war was over, Ono’s family had to face great hardships, as did everyone else in Tokyo. She, along with her mother, had to beg for food and also bartered goods for rice. During this entire time, her father was still in Hanoi, although according to Yoko, he was in French Indochina serving a sentence in a prisoner of war camp.
Japan became stable enough by 1946 and returned to normality. Gakushuin school reopened again during this time. She started her studies again and was put in the same class as the future emperor of Japan. After completing graduation in 1951, Yoko started studying philosophy at Gakushuin University for two semesters.

Yoko started a new life with her family in New York City after graduating from school when she was 18 years old. She continued her education at the Sarah Lawrence College and began her lifelong affair with arts. This was when Ono started meeting various artists, poets, and other influential people she found interesting. On the other hand, her parents disliked her meetings with such people.
Soon Yoko Ono started experimenting with her art. She set some paintings on fore during live performances. Yoko married a Japanese Composer, Toshi Ichiyinagi, in 1956. However, they filed for divorce in 1962. During this period, she moved back to Japan, where she got into depression and was kept in a mental institution.
